The western coastline of Rhodes, stretching from Kremasti to Kamiros Skala, is facing increasing pressure and risk. Coastal erosion and extreme weather events are no longer occasional incidents but an everyday reality that steadily reshapes the shoreline.
Rising temperatures linked to climate change, continuous soil erosion, uncontrolled tourist development, and the gradual abandonment of the natural coastline have created a fragile and dangerous situation. In several areas, beaches are shrinking year by year, roads are deteriorating next to the sea, and basic infrastructure is under strain. Recent extreme weather phenomena have highlighted how vulnerable these coastal zones have become.
Although studies and planning efforts are underway to address the problem, the overall picture remains worrying. The pace of erosion is often faster than the implementation of protective measures, while fragmented responsibilities and the lack of a unified coastal management strategy slow down effective action. As time passes, the cost of restoring damaged areas increases, and in some cases, the damage risks becoming irreversible.
Today, many parts of the western coast show clear signs of degradation: neglected walkways, debris in streams, poorly planned structures, polluted beaches, and roads literally being eaten away by the sea.
