Tomb of Cleobulus the Lindian, Rhodes, Lindos, Greece

The most famous burial monument of "Kleoboulos" in Lindos

Tomb of Cleobulus the Lindian, Rhodes, Lindos, Greece

Cleobolus of Rhodes, tyrant of Lindos in Rhodes, one of the "seven wise men" of ancient Greece (6th century BC, he was alive at least until 560 BC). The proverbs "metron ariston", "edonis kratei", etc. are attributed to him. It is also called Cleoboulos of Lindos, because ancient Rhodes was divided into 4 ancient cities: Rhodes, Lindos, Kameiros and Ialyssos, parts of which are preserved to this day.

It was symbolically named "The Tomb of Kleovoulos", without having anything to do with the tyrant of Lindos, who was one of the seven sages of antiquity and who ruled Lindos, but it is a wonderful burial monument that reminds of the corresponding circular of Salamis.

It is the burial monument of a wealthy family. It is a circular building, with elaborate masonry and a vaulted roof. Inside there is a bed carved into the rock, a type of sarcophagus with a cover that is not preserved (2nd - 1st century BC). Traces of frescoes as well as the name "Agios Emilianos" testify to its conversion into a Christian temple in a later era.

You look at him from the Acropolis of Lindos and feel that he is inviting you to walk a route that you already know will be unforgettable.

Finding Cleobolus is a magical journey that you don't want to end. Immerse yourself in the bottomless magic of the sea, admire a lunar and primeval landscape and Lindos is by your side like a white butterfly. You chat with the wild goats all the way, you pass the mill and somewhere there when you wonder how you will climb the hill to find the grave you are there and you don't want all that you see to end.
